  □ Background of the Symposium
   The China Beijing International High-tech Industries Week ("the International Week") is held every May in Beijing. It is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Information Industry, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the Beijing Municipal Government.
The International Week offers high-tech trade exhibitions, feature presentations, and high-tech trade talks, highlighting the current status and achievements in the high-tech industry in such areas as internet technology, electronics, communication, bio-engineering, health and drugs, environmental protection, new materials and new energy.
With the successful completion of the past four sessions, the International Week has grown into a world-class high-tech conference. More than 1 million guests representing thousands of famous enterprises participated in the past four sessions, which achieved a total turnover of tens of billion dollars' worth of products and services. It has attracted extensive concern and wide coverage by more than 1,000 famous media organizations.
The 5th International Week and China Beijing International Hi-tech Industries Expo will be the first international activity of its kind since China's accession to the WTO and its successful bidding for the 2008 Olympics. Both Chinese and foreign political dignitaries will participate in the event. Famous foreign and domestic enterprises will gather again in Beijing.
The year of 2002 will be the first year after China's accession to the WTO, and consequently, every industry and sector are faced with challenges and opportunities brought by globalization. The development of China's health, drug and social securtiy sector, in particular, is expected to experience tremendous shock and influence from related international sectors as well as unprecedented reforms. The goal for China's health, drug and social security departments and enterprises in the 21st century is to integrate its system into the international market and make greater achievements. Evidently, for China's health, drug and social security system, the policy research, development strategy, experience and opinions, high-tech development and exchange will be the special focus and concern for the medicare and drug administration departments, Chinese enterprises, foreign investment enterprises in China, international health and drug, as well as insurance sectors.
In view of the above factors, the 5th China Beijing International High-tech Industries Week and the China Beijing International Sci-tech Industries Expo will hold the Symposium on WTO and the Development of China's Health, Drug and Social Security, in an effort to provide an opportunity for world-wide colleagues to discuss and exchange information and technology, and in turn promote international cooperation and development in China's health, drug and social security sector.

     This symposium is the first of its kind held in the Beijing International High-tech Industries Week after China's accession to the WTO. Delegates are to make feature presentations and seminars as to the trends of China's health, drug and social security policies, as well as international standard practices.
