□ Background of the Symposium |
The China Beijing International High-tech
Industries Week ("the International Week") is
held every May in Beijing. It is jointly hosted by the
Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Foreign
Trade and Economic Cooperation, the Ministry of Education,
the Ministry of Information Industry, China Council for
the Promotion of International Trade and the Beijing Municipal
Government.
The International Week offers high-tech trade exhibitions,
feature presentations, and high-tech trade talks, highlighting
the current status and achievements in the high-tech industry
in such areas as internet technology, electronics, communication,
bio-engineering, health and drugs, environmental protection,
new materials and new energy.
With the successful completion of the past four sessions,
the International Week has grown into a world-class high-tech
conference. More than 1 million guests representing thousands
of famous enterprises participated in the past four sessions,
which achieved a total turnover of tens of billion dollars'
worth of products and services. It has attracted extensive
concern and wide coverage by more than 1,000 famous media
organizations.
The 5th International Week and China Beijing International
Hi-tech Industries Expo will be the first international
activity of its kind since China's accession to the WTO
and its successful bidding for the 2008 Olympics. Both
Chinese and foreign political dignitaries will participate
in the event. Famous foreign and domestic enterprises
will gather again in Beijing.
The year of 2002 will be the first year after China's
accession to the WTO, and consequently, every industry
and sector are faced with challenges and opportunities
brought by globalization. The development of China's health,
drug and social securtiy sector, in particular, is expected
to experience tremendous shock and influence from related
international sectors as well as unprecedented reforms.
The goal for China's health, drug and social security
departments and enterprises in the 21st century is to
integrate its system into the international market and
make greater achievements. Evidently, for China's health,
drug and social security system, the policy research,
development strategy, experience and opinions, high-tech
development and exchange will be the special focus and
concern for the medicare and drug administration departments,
Chinese enterprises, foreign investment enterprises in
China, international health and drug, as well as insurance
sectors.
In view of the above factors, the 5th China Beijing International
High-tech Industries Week and the China Beijing International
Sci-tech Industries Expo will hold the Symposium on WTO
and the Development of China's Health, Drug and Social
Security, in an effort to provide an opportunity for world-wide
colleagues to discuss and exchange information and technology,
and in turn promote international cooperation and development
in China's health, drug and social security sector.
